Pick-ups transmit string vibrations to an amplifier. Strings on all string instruments vibrate very differently from one to the other depending on a multitude of acoustic properties of each individual instrument, including solid bodied instruments. Tone is thus very much affected by all materials used. For example, the very distinct difference between the sound and feedback characteristic of a Gibson 330 and that of a 335, is primarily the result of an additional piece of wood inside the body of the 335, which is missing in a hollow 330. Pickup feedback is relative to the combined total of many resonating elements of each instrument. My guitar trading experience in the 1970's included re-finishing of several beaten up 50's/60's Stratocasters. It significantly changed their tone, even though it was done by DIck Knight, the best in business at the time. Stripping the factory finish on a 72 Strat which I had owned from new for a french polish also that also had a noticeable effect on its tone.

Lacquer doesn't affect the sound on an electric. Wood makes no difference either. An electric guitar can be made of concrete. The electromagnetic pickups don't care about wood. Am I blowing your mind.

Ha ha remember watching this at the time, recorded it and kept the 'video tape' (Google it kids) for years.  I remember having, shall we say, very mixed impressions of some the players etc but there was no internet to discuss it on, so no heated arguments or battle of the comments back then, we just watched stuff.   Thanks for posting it.

God bless all those dear employees we're seeing back in the old days - in the old film footage - for did they know what incredible and unbounded happiness and joy their work brought to boys and girls ... Music is the ultimate, universal language for us all. Music hit my soul as a kid so strongly that I just had to learn to play the guitar - and I did; and it was good! It's the greatest thing in the world.

If only the advert breaks were that short nowadays. A sneering, patronising, pap-TV documentary to help fathers try to 'understand' what their sons were 'into' but they weren't and, therefore, couldn't fathom. A wonderful piece of TV history and laughably awful crap to boot. Bravo to the OP.
